UWLSU Beginners’ Running club in partnership with Ealing Eagles Running Club offers you an opportunity to progress from not much exercise to running 5k over nine weeks. The programme is completely FREE, all you need to do is register and show up! 

Recent graduates from the Ealing Eagles beginners’ programme range in age from late twenties to mid-sixties and in fitness from former half marathon runners returning from time away, to people with health issues who need to check with their doctor before they can start.

In weekly sessions meeting at UWLSU Gym, (St Mary’s Road) and organised by Ealing Eagles volunteers, UWLSU Beginners will start the session with a gentle warm-up before a gentle jog/walk, finishing the session with some cool-down stretches. The jogging is entirely at your own pace (you should still be able to hold a conversation), and over the weeks we will slowly reduce the amount of walking and increase the jogging until you can run 5km continuously. Our experience is that most people will take six to eight weeks, going out twice a week (homework is to repeat the same session some time over the weekend), to progress from not running at all to running 5km. Please note that you will be expected to run at a pace at which you can talk – so that you can do this and also be able to respond to the volunteers, you are asked not to wear headphones during beginners’ sessions.

  • You don’t need to have any special equipment to start (a good pair of trainers, hi-viz with reflective strips if you are running in the dark or at dusk and a sense of humour)
  • You don’t need to have any particular level of fitness (30mins unaided walking should be fine) or to be able to run a certain distance to qualify
  • Just turn up on the day with enthusiasm and a commitment to follow the programme!

After the first session, there will be an informal workshop to give you the chance to find out more about the programme and ask any questions you may have.
