UWL Students’ Union is a non-profit which provides services for the students of University of West London which support their education and help them to graduate, whilst having fun along the way.
UWLSU exists solely to serve UWL students who make up our membership. The Union is democratically led, and each year three students are elected by the student body to represent them and their views at senior leadership level. This means that UWL students have a voice which is truly at the heart of everything the Union does.
Along with being led by elected student officers, UWLSU also enables students to influence our day to day decisions through a variety of other ways including through policy making, running course rep schemes as well as projects which involve getting views directly from each member of our student body. These services, and more, are overseen by our Representation Team.
Another way in which we support our students’ is through a free, impartial, confidential advice service. Professional staff provide students with advice, information and advocacy on a range of issues with a focus on academic issues. The most common issues we deal with include situations where a student wishes to appeal grades or a university decision, and situations where students have been accused of some sort of misconduct by the university.
Of course, a big part of the student experience is to have fun! And the Students’ Union helps with that too. UWLSU is home to Freddie’s Bar, which serves a huge range of food and drinks and plays host to various events, such as live music and club nights to comedy and quizzes.
Likewise, located at the heart of the campus, Freddie’s Coffeehouse boasts quality food and real Starbucks coffee at great value prices.
UWLSU is a great place for students build communities and friendships and we support students to run and participate in a range of extra-curricular activities. Students form groups around any number of themes – we have religious groups, activity societies, political and charity groups, and groups bringing students from countries around the world together. Most of our activities are run by students for students and UWLSU provide the students with the skills, knowledge and administrative support they need to succeed. Participating in student activities offers students the chance to socialise, build networks, and develop new skills.
To ensure that the services we deliver are of the highest quality and are efficient and cost-effective, we have teams running our business support services which include Administration, People Operations, Finance and Communications.
As a registered charity and a registered company, we have three key documents that set out the rules for how we operate and what we are (and aren’t) allowed to do. These documents are as follows:
The course reps exist as the link between the University and the students and the students’ union and the students. They are there to listen to views and opinion and feed those back to both the university and the students’ union. A course rep can be any member of a course that is elected during a class poll. The students’ union provides training and support to the individual and they are there to make your course the best it can be.
We have two kinds of elections here at UWLSU.
In November, we vote for who will represent the university at the NUS national conference. This a great chance to meet students from other unions and to help shape national students' policy for the coming year.
Every year in March we hold the UWLSU elections where students get to decide who runs their union. Anyone can run in these elections and the final decision is the student vote. A students’ union exists for its' members, and electing a great sabbatical team means positive change in the university. Click here for more information about the elections.
The advice service is one of the many services offered by the students’ union to support the students. The advice team offers a wide range of advice services including: mitigation, course related issues, complaints, appeals, disciplinary interviews or hearing advice. They will signpost you to the right support service if they aren’t able to offer the support you require. This is free service that is 100% confidential and open to all students. Click here to find out more about the advice service.
Did you know that over 75% of our staff are students? Becoming a member of student staff offers them a job to love that makes them part of a large community. It gives students flexibility, opportunities, experience, development and support as well as being a rewarding role.
The UWLSU army is essentially a huge family at UWL, it promotes belonging and diversity and is made up predominantly of students. These students have got involved in the UWLSU army by being freshers’ crew, student staff, members of clubs and societies and course reps. This army represents the students on a huge variety of levels and exists in a fun community.
Like the name suggests Freddie’s bar – is a bar situated at UWLSU. Not only do we have a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, we also have a mouth-watering variety of hot and cold food that us students make and serve up, for students.
We’re open from 11am until 11pm for students to pop in at any time to chill and play pool! We hold a wide range of events in Freddie’s - click here to go to the events page.
Freddie’s Coffeehouse is the home of Larry the Latte and REAL Starbucks. We have a range of hot and cold food – it’s great value at even better prices! We’re here to charge you up on caffeine for the day ahead and you can also grab a quick nibble for the go. We’re open from 8am to 6 pm.
Any profit made in Freddie’s goes directly back into UWLSU. It’s how we fund the great range of activities and opportunities on offer. So when you’re choosing somewhere for lunch, remember that the money you spend with us is an investment in UWL students.

Our sports teams are collectively known as the UWL Warriors and there are plenty of opportunities for students to compete or play in friendly matches. We have men’s and women’s football, rugby, basketball, women’s netball, mixed hockey, women’s cheerleading, snow sports, pole fitness, cricket, AND capoeira! We’ve already increased our membership by 114% and we want to welcome even more people to the #UWLSUarmy!
University shouldn’t just be about the time spent it class; it should be about what students get up to in their spare time as well! That’s why we have an amazing and diverse range of societies designed to help students mix with people that have the same hobbies and interests. The best thing about societies is that if a student can’t find a group that their interested in, we can help them set one up! Find out more about our societies.
Not everyone has the time or money to dedicate to joining a sports team, which is why this year we’ve set up a scheme called Get Active – the premise is simple; we put on a sport or activity, you pay, and you play! So far we’ve had 5-a-side football, table tennis and even yoga, and we’re open to much more in the future!
Even though university students are not particularly known for their healthy lifestyles (!), we do have a gym in the SU where all students are welcome to get active and keep fit. All support staff at UWLSU gain free access to the UWLSU gym. Student staff members get access at a discounted price.
One of the main things we do in the SU is putting on events – both our own and helping societies with theirs – and we always want to hear from students about the kind of events they want to have. That’s why we have our ‘Make it a Thing’ events enterprise project: We get students to think about the sort of things they want to happen, and we help them set them up! We’ve already had UV paint parties, album launches and band nights, and we want to have so much more – we get them started with the funding, booking the venue, and hosting the event itself, and then they get to have an event on your CV that looks fantastic!
