Kat Hackshaw

Hi, I’m Kat,

your Students’ Union President, previously the Vice President of Activities and Participation. I was an Events Management student and graduated in 2017. I wasn’t an active member in the students’ union until my second year where I decided to join the Netball team, a sport I loved but had not played in 10 years. Getting involved in Netball I found my university community and family and I felt so supported throughout the rest of my university journey.

By getting involved in netball it opened me up to loads of opportunities within the Student’s Union. I gained confidence in myself, which led me to run for a Netball Committee position. I joined Freshers crew and also worked in the SU in the Communications team and the Representation team.

Knowing how much the Student’s Union impacted on my life and student experience. I really wanted to help make an impact on the lives of students at UWL, which is why I decided to run For Vice president of Activities last year. After a year in the role I wanted to step up and I was elected as Student Union President for the 2018/2019 academic year.

As the Students’ Union President I oversee everything that happens in the union. It’s a big step but I’m incredibly excited about taking on this role to represent YOUR needs with my amazing officer team.

This year I will be focusing on Student Mental Health looking at the mental health support we offer to students and how that can be sustainable and embedded into the culture of the university.

Cost of Living and how we can better support you financially looking at travel cost, Housing, cost of food on campus. These topics were certainly an issue for me whilst I was studying.

Removing the Barriers to success and helping BME students to overcome the challenges they face and achieve the best degree possible.

I want YOU to find your community like I did in my netball team whether that’s through joining a sports team, student group, being a course rep, friends within your course. I want YOU to feel supported in the institution so that you can make the most of every opportunity thrown at you and I want YOU to have the best possible university experience you think you could have had.

Please come and say hey if you see me around campus and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need some advice.

Have an amazing year.

Kat Hackshaw
