Your Union

Welcome to UWLSU! You’ve just become a member of the number one students' union in the country. We’re here to help you make the most of your time at UWL and leave with more than just a degree.

We are your route to some amazing clubs and societies, a thriving and vibrant community and some of the best people you will ever meet. We know that things might be a little different this September but we want to make your experience the best it possibly can be. Here’s a little bit about us...

Advice

UWLSU runs an independent, confidential and free advice service, here to support you through your time at UWL with any issues you may have. Our job is to ensure you have the information and support you need.

You can make contact with the advice team by emailing uwl.su@uwl.ac.uk with your query and we can arrange for an advisor to give you a call. Once you have been allocated an advisor they will support you from the very start until your issue is resolved.

Coffee Union & Freddie's Bar

Between lectures you need a space to relax and unwind. Not only do we have spaces to relax, but we also serve delicious food and drink at both! Grab your caffeine fix from one of our expert student baristas at Coffee Union, accompanied by a selection of sandwiches and cakes.

Cold food not your style? Come along to Freddie's Bar and choose from our delicious menu of hot bar food. While you won't be able to grab a hot meal and pint from Freddies until January you can come visit Coffee Union from September onwards! P.S Coffee Union and Freddie's Bar will both have extensive cleaning and social distancing measures in place, so whatever happens, you’re safe when you come by to visit.

Community and Belonging

We are dedicated to creating unforgettable extra-curricular activities outside of the lecture room. There are loads of ways that you can get involved and the most popular of these are student groups, also known as clubs and societies. Joining a club or society allows you to do something you love, meet some like-minded people and make some lifelong friends. Academic Societies will also help you gain some really valuable work experience giving you the extra edge when you graduate. Have a look at all our clubs and societies here.

Student Groups

The safety of our students and staff is at the forefront of everything we do!

We are working tirelessly with the relevant governing bodies to ensure the safe return of activity for all of our students. We cannot wait to have you all back out there doing what you love and enjoying yourself at training, fixtures, sessions to stay active and other events!

As an alternative to face to face activity, our awesome sports teams and societies will be doing some incredible virtual activity which you can get involved in so make sure to check out our website and social media regularly.

Course-based activities

We work with your lecturers to deliver bespoke activity that is directly related to your course or future career. As well as giving you the opportunity to access career enhancing activities as part of your timetable, we also can provide spaces for you to socialise, hold team building activities and develop a community with the people you study with. Got an idea for a course-based activity? Get in touch! We want to make sure that the activities we deliver are always driven by our students.

Reading

Our office in Reading is on the 9th floor of Fountain House and is staffed by George, our Berkshire Partnership Coordinator. He works with your academic team to deliver activities that work around your busy schedule. Whether it’s pre-placement socials where you can chat with a registered nurse or 3rd year students to find out what you can expect from your first time in practice, or group social to let off some steam after a hectic week – we want to make sure you have an excellent all round student experience. Please come and say hello! We can’t wait to meet you.

UWL Sport & Fitness Centre

Good news comes to those who weight!

Gyms have been given the green light to reopen and we cannot wait to get you back in the gym and working out!

On Thursday 9 July the Government announced that indoor gyms would formally be allowed to open in the near future. Along with this announcement came very specific health and safety guidance and measures from the Government in relation to Covid-19. With this in mind, we are currently working on a detailed plan to ensure we have the correct measures and procedures in place to enable us to open at the earliest opportunity.

We now have an open date of Tuesday 1 September.
